Soil Stewards Projects

2008 Projects:

For this growing season, we’re planning on making the most of our hoophouse while focusing on both campus and community. Seeding started in February and we already have some sprouts coming up!

2007 Projects:
A Look Ahead

In January 2007 we were awarded a Sustainable Idaho Grant to the tune of $7000 (including matching funds and volunteer time) to build a hoophouse on the farm. This hoophouse will enable us to offer more activities early and late in the season and to produce well beyond our former capacity when it comes to warm season crops like tomatoes, eggplants and peppers.

Our hoophouse kit was ordered from the Farm Tek company. Soil Stewards Farm manager Heidi worked with Parker Farm Manager Roy Patten to decipher the directions, buy the necessary additional equipment, and get us all out there building!

Hoophouse construction was completed on Thursday, May 31, 2007, and the first tomatoes were planted inside on Saturday, June 1. Next year, we'll be able to start tomatoes in there almost a month earlier!

Also new this year, we are offering a Work For Share program for some of our CSA members. One of our members will be producing a documentary video about the club!

2006 Projects:
A Look Back

The past season has been an overwhelming success for the Soil Stewards. We managed to sell 27 CSA shares, which we filled every week with an ever changing assortment of fresh, beautiful veggies.

Our volunteers donated over 400 hours to the farm over the year. Wow! Our members got plenty to eat as well!

We partnered with PCEI's Backyard Harvest,  donating vegetable seedlings for their pantry garden, and 300 pounds of fresh produce to the foodbanks and other food distribution centers.  Click here to learn more about how this great project is feeding the hungry in our community!

We supplied our campus foodservice company, Sodexho, with produce, herbs and edible flowers throughout the season. This has been a great connection to getting our produce to students on campus! Some of our veggies ended up being served to the president of the University at special events!

Thanks to everyone for the wonderful season...see you next year!

2005 Projects

In 2005 the farm supported an eleven member CSA, sold produce at an on campus farmstand, and sold the campus foodservice our carrots & potatoes!
