ENGINEERING

Overview

2004 was the first year the UI Department of Chemical Engineering competed in the American Institute of Chemical Engineers’ (AIChE) National ChE-Car competition. Seven ChE students took first place in both poster presentation and car performance categories at the Pacific Northwest Regional Conference in Seattle. The team was later invited to compete at the National Conference in Austin, Texas. UI finished in the top 10 out of 31 universities. The team out placed a number of major national universities such as Utah, Washington State, West Virginia, UC Berkeley, Cornell, Ohio State, Iowa, and Nevada. In the 2004 UI Engineering Design Expo, the team was also recognized for Excellence in Booth Presentation.

Money

AIChE is looking for sponsors to help raise $5500 in order to continue competing among other Engineering colleges.  This is a brief outline of what the expenses go towards.

Car components                 $1000

Travel expenses Nationals  $4000

Misc. expenses                     $500

Showing the dedication of last year’s students, the UI team won the car competition as well as the poster competition and donated the prize money back into the AIChE ChE-Car fund so they could continue this educational competition.  The Department of Chemical Engineering, UI Parents Advisory Board, The College of Engineering, Associated Students of UI, and fellow alumni are some of the sponsors that we represented in the past but we want to represent you.  The size of the contribution will determine the portion of the car used to display your logo or name.  All sponsors will be advertised on our poster presentation.  Thank you for your support and contribution.

Text Box: The ChE-Car Competition
The AIChE contest consists of building a shoebox sized car that is powered from a chemical reaction. Each University’s ChE-Car is given two opportunities to traverse a specified distance carrying a specific load. The required load and distance will be given to each team one hour prior to the start of the performance competition. The distance will be between 50–100 ft and the load will between 0-500 ml of water. Teams are allowed to adjust only “fuel” or reactants used in the car’s chemical reaction. The goal is to have the car stop the closest to the finish line while staying in bounds and carrying the load. The course is a wedge shape with an arc for a finish line. A penalty of 10 feet will be added to your distance from the finish line if your car goes out of bounds.
