The Body Image Task Force is dedicated to promoting the concept of positive body image for all people. We promote the right of all people to live and work free from institutionalized discrimination based on body shape, height, weight or physical appearance. We will fight "looksism" in all its forms, affirming that all people have their own unique beauty, and work to bring that understanding to our communities and the larger society.
-Since understanding comes from education, we promote consciousness raising on the issues of "looksism" and "fatphobia", and its connection to other forms of prejudice, especially sexism. As prejudice and self-hatred are learned early, we devote special attention to the education of our youth.
-We will take action to insure that all people have access to the information necessary to make informed decisions about their health care, especially as it relates to weight, eating disorders and diets. We want to teach people how to assert their rights in a "looksist" world through verbal self-defense as well as physical.
-Since the media has a pervasive impact on body image and values in this society, we want to educate people about the media's influence. We want to teach people how to be discerning and aware of these images and how individuals can influence the media.
-To affectivity address the complex issues related to body image, we must understand that solutions will not be reached through single approaches. Therefore, we are a multi-faceted group, working together to support and reinforce each other as we undertake various approaches in addressing the complex issue of body image. We affirm the dignity and equality of all people regardless of sex, race, ability, age, class, sexual orientation, gender, ethnicity, religion, size or appearance and will work with others to change the systems that limit and control people's lives.
